OS X :: Reset Administrator Password - Root ChangesJan 13, 2009
I just bought a used Emac running 10.3.9. The previous owner does not remember the administrator password nor did I realize how important it is to have. I have the original install discs and did boot using the disc. I then went under the install menu and chose reset password. I changed the user password but have been unsuccessful at changing the admin password. The drop down menu in password reset gave me the option of Administrator (root), Application, or finally user. I have read a couple of articles cautioning not to change or work with root changes.

I took my laptop in to a shop to have a new hard drive installed and the guy in the shop upgraded me to Snow Leopard. I then tried to use migration assistant to get my files back off an external HD and it's telling me my password and/or user name is incorrect. Is it possible the guy in the shop changed it? Is there a generic password when you reinstall things? Or do I need to restart my Macbook using the old Leopard disk?

I have used Disk Utility to attempt to password protect a folder but its not working for me. I go to FILE>NEW>DISK IMAGE FROM FOLDER I then highlight the folder I want to password protect and click the IMAGE button.In the window that pops up, I then select 128 bit encryption and leave image format on COMPRESSED.Then I enter and verify the password I want to place on the folder and hit OK.The resulting disk image appears to have been modified, but when I double click on the supposedly password secured folder, nothing happens. The folder doesn't open, nor does a window pop up asking for a password.I'm running snow leopard.Â
